Adjudication Clearance
Adjudication clearance is a process by which an applicant for security clearance is assessed for trustworthiness and fitness for a responsibility that could negatively impact US national security. Adjudication clearance does not make a determination as to an individual's criminal guilt or aptness for a particular position within an agency or organization. The primary purpose of adjudication clearance is to ensure that any individual granted access to classified, secret, or top secret information is an acceptable security risk and that the individual will use this information to act in the best interests of the national security of the US.
Whether or not adjudication clearance is granted is determined by the Department of Defense (DoD). At the request of the individual's employer, an application for security clearance is submitted to the DoD. Based on the applicant's personal and professional history, a determination will be made as to whether or not to allow the individual access to sensitive program information. If the individual is denied adjudication clearance, the individual will receive a Statement of Reasons (SOR). The SOR will list the allegations against the individual that led to the individual's denial for security clearance.
