Apply for Security Clearance
Individuals employed by certain organizations and agencies may be required to obtain security clearance in order to perform specific tasks related to their job. When an individual needs to apply for security clearance, they first must have the authorization of their employer. Once their employer has authorized the individual to apply for security clearance, the individual will complete a security clearance application. This application is then submitted to the Department of Defense (DoD) for review. The application will contain information relevant to the applicant's professional history as well as personal history.
The reason an individual needing security clearance must apply for security clearance is because the DoD must determine the risk the individual poses to national security. By obtaining security clearance an individual will have access to either confidential, secret, or top secret information. Those granted security clearance must prove themselves to be trustworthy and mature enough to handle sensitive information in a responsible manner. After reviewing the individual's application and reviewing information obtained through investigations and interviews, the DoD will make a determination as to whether or not an individual will be approved for security clearance.
When an individual has to apply for security clearance, it is recommended that they seek the advice of an experienced lawyer before completing the application. A skilled lawyer can help the individual understand the security guidelines established by the DoD. By understanding these guidelines, the individual may be able to more comprehensively complete the application and know what to expect during the process.
