Facility Security Officer
A facility security officer may be asked to submit an application with the Department of Defense (DoD) to obtain either secret or top secret security clearance. By submitting this application to the DoD, the company or agency for which the facility security officer works can determine the level of risk the employee poses to sensitive information. The company can determine whether the employee is an suitable security risk. The DoD will process the application and make a determination based on the employee's history and credentials.
After reviewing the application, the DoD will determine whether the facility security officer is approved or denied security clearance. If the facility security officer is denied security clearance, the individual will receive a Statement of Reasons (SOR) from the DoD. The SOR will outline the allegations against the facility security officer regarding the denial of the request for secret or top secret security clearance. The facility security officer will be given the chance to respond to the allegations in an attempt to obtain the requested security clearance.
Retaining the services of an experienced and skilled attorney is recommended when answering allegations in an SOR. Several security guidelines are used by the DoD to determine security clearance. Many individuals do not fully understand these guidelines, but a practiced attorney will have a comprehensive understanding of these guidelines and can help individuals formulate acceptable answers. In order to obtain the required security clearance, a facility security officer may need the services of a qualified attorney.
