Security Clearance Application

When an individual works for an organization that has access to sensitive information, the individual may have to obtain security clearance to carry out their job tasks. Because information is classified as confidential, secret, or top secret, individuals have to be authorized to access this information. In order to obtain security clearance, the individual will have to submit a security clearance application to the Department of Defense (DoD) for review and authorization. Once the security clearance application is submitted to the DoD, the individual's level of security risk will be assessed.

Applicants will be asked to provide both personal and professional information on the security clearance application. An investigation will be conducted based on the information contained in the application. Based on the information provided on the security clearance application and the outcome of the investigation, the DoD will determine whether or not to grant the individual security clearance. If security clearance is denied, the individual will receive a Statement of Reasons (SOR) outlining the allegations that led to the security clearance denial.

Individuals in need of security clearance may want to contact an attorney prior to completing the security clearance application. An attorney well-versed in security clearance can help individuals understand the security guidelines utilized by the DoD and can help ensure the application is thoroughly completed. If an individual needs help appealing a denied security clearance application, an attorney can assist the individual in devising acceptable and honest answers to each of the allegations contained in the SOR.
