Security SF 86
The security SF 86 is a standard form questionnaire to be completed by all applicants pursuing national security positions. National security positions are those positions in which employees may need access to confidential, secret, or top secret information. The security SF 86 provides the Department of Defense (DoD) with personal and professional information in regard to each application. Through the use of the security SF 86, the DoD can make a more accurate assessment as to the security risk the individual applicant poses to the company or agency for which the individual is employed.
Individual employees are not able to request security clearance without prior authorization by their employer. When an individual does require initial or additional security clearance, the individual will complete the security SF 86. The information provided on the SF 86 is supplied to the DoD in a voluntary manner. Upon completing the security SF 86, the applicant will either be approved or denied the requested security clearance.
If an individual needs assistance completing a security SF 86 or has concerns regarding information requested on the form, a lawyer may be able to be of assistance. A lawyer well-versed in security clearance issues can answer an individual's questions and concerns regarding security clearance matters. It may be in the best interest of the applicant to seek expert legal advice when completing a security SF 86 to ensure that the form is completed properly so that security clearance will not be denied.
