Washington Headquarters Services provides support functions to the Department of Defense (DoD) as well as operational and administrative support to DoD agencies. Among the many programs of the administrative services division of the Washington Headquarters Services are a security program and an operational security program. These programs help ensure that national security is protected by helping the DoD determine which individuals will have access to sensitive information pertinent to the national security of the US.

The DoD, with the help of Washington Headquarters Services, makes the determination as to whether an individual may have access to confidential, secret, or top secret information. Typically, the need to have access to these types of sensitive information arises during the course of an individuals work for an organization or agency. The individual will be asked to complete an application for security clearance. The application will detail the applicant's personal and professional history. Washington Headquarters Services helps the DoD ensure that all investigative processes are carried out in a timely manner.

The DoD, after reviewing the individuals information, will either approve or deny the applicant's request for security clearance.
